DIY Sherlock Notebook
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED
A notebook or sketch book (I used this style)
A cutting mat and ruler
Thin 2mm craft foam and an Xacto knife to cut it
Contrasting pen to trace the pattern onto the foam
Strong glue like E6000 and an old paintbrush
Black and gold paint
Medium paintbrush and fine tip paintbrush
Decoupage sealer or Mod Podge
Optional gloss finish sealer
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Measure the front flap of your notebook or sketchbook. Don’t measure all the way to the spine, only measure the flap. Your width measurement will be slightly more narrow than the product description.
Cut out the pattern with an Xacto blade. Make sure to cut out all of the interior details; the numbers, the door knocker and the letterbox.
Trace the pattern onto the craft foam with a contrasting pencil, pen or chalk. Cut out the foam with an Xacto knife.
Trim any excess around the edges before gluing the foam to the cover. When gluing the foam to the notebook, use a strong glue like E6ooo. Make sure the paintbrush you use can be discarded – this glue will not wash out.
Cover the front of the notebook with a coat or two of black paint. Let the paint dry completely between coats.
Once the black paint is dry, apply two coats of decoupage sealer or Mod Podge. I like to apply it thickly to add texture. Let the sealant dry completely between coats. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to speed up the drying process.
Use the pattern again to trace the gold details onto the notebook and fill in those portions with gold paint. Refer to the pattern to paint the inside shape of the doorknocker. Once the gold paint dries, your notebook is done.
If you’d like to add detail to the letterbox and doorknocker, use a black sharpie pen.
Adding a gloss finish is an optional step. You can use any kind of paint or sealant that has a gloss finish.
