DIY Nerd Decor – A Tech Inspired Keyboard Craft
Become a Patron!
Turn an old keyboard into nerd decor; a pencil cup. This DIY keyboard craft makes a great geek gift. If you’re a PC gamer, you know that your keyboard is eventually going to give out. MOBA players kill the Q,W,E,R and D keys. RPG players wear out the W, A, S, and D keys. If you play WoW, your number keys and space bar eventually wear out. It’s going to happen.
You don’t have to toss your beloved keyboard in the trash. It worked hard for you all those years and now you can make a fun DIY keyboard craft out of its remains. It’s kind of like looting your kill if you think about it…

DIY Nerd Décor – Keyboard Pencil Cup
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED
an old keyboard from your house or a thrift store
cardboard – an old cereal box from home
download the pattern
screwdriver
wire clippers
duct tape
glue gun
glue sticks
black paint
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Remove all of the keyboard keys. Insert a flat head screwdriver under the key and lever it up until it pops off. Wash and dry all of the keys. Use a wire cutter to snip off the plastic piece that sticks out the back. (Not all keys will have the same piece. But if yours does, you want to cut these off so you can glue the keys down flat later on.)
Download and print out the box pattern from craftymcfangirl.com. Cut out all of the pattern pieces. Trace out the pattern onto cardboard or chipboard. You will need four sides and one bottom. Cut out the cardboard pieces and arrange them as shown on the pattern.
Assemble the box with duct tape. Use four small strips to attach the bottom to the sides.
Then paint the entire outside of the pencil cup with black acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely before continuing.
Once the paint is dry, use duct tape to create the four sides of the box.
Once that is complete, paint the inside with more black acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely before continuing.
Heat up your glue gun to add the keyboard keys. If you want to spell out words, plan out which keys before you glue them on.
Starting from the bottom of the box, run a thick line of glue across and apply four keyboard keys. Repeat this process five times on the first side. You will be using 20 keys per side. Glue keys on the other three sides the same way. Make sure all of the keys are facing the same direction. Don’t glue any of them upside-down!
