Doll Materials

This list of custom doll materials is an exhaustive list of all the items needed to make a custom doll.

I may be using only some of these items in any given YouTube video or Twitch live stream. I wanted to make a page where there is a complete list, gathered from all of my research.

These are the exact custom doll materials that I am using – These items may be more expensive than other materials you can get to do the same project. Feel free to get a less expensive item.

GET SOME DOLLS:

Monster High Dolls (or any other Ball Jointed Dolls)
(You can search on Ebay for used doll lots instead of purchasing new dolls on Amazon – I have done both methods)

REMOVE THE FACE:

Acetone
Q-tips and Cotton pads

REMOVE THE HAIR:

Thread scissors
Needle nose Pliers
Hot water or Hair Drier to soften the glue

PAINT THE FACE:

Watercolor Pencils (do NOT use oil-based crayola pencils – they react badly with the sealant)
Chalk Pastels
Acrylic Paint
Small paint brushes and detail paint brushes
Mr Super Clear UV Cut FLAT spray – This is an import and requires a mask. You may wish to use another matte varnish. This is the product that most custom doll artists recommend.

MODIFY THE BODY:

Armature wire
Sand paper
Apoxie Sculpt
Use only air curing products. Do not put your doll in the oven to heat cure polymer clay – it will MELT!

REROOT HAIR:

doll hair – brown – blonde – red
Rerooting tool – create one with a craft knife handle or keyless chuck and a needle with a clipped open hole – here is a video that shows you how.
Fabri-Tac for gluing hair inside the head

CREATE WIGS:

Mod podge
stretchy knit fabric and rubber bands
sharpie marker and scissors
saran wrap
dye for nylon or acrylic hair (make sure it says it is for synthetic materials – original RIT die will NOT work)
