MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

For the Blue Bird you will need:
light blue, light brown, yellow and white polymer clay
black paint or a marker
clay tools
X-acto blade
gloss glaze

For the bow you will need:
barrette
red wired ribbon one and-a-half or two inches wide
yellow and blue satin or grosgrain ribbon
scissors
glue gun and glue sticks

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

The Bluebird:

Start with one white and one light blue flat circles of clay.  Make sure they are both the same size. If they are not, place the smaller piece on top of the larger piece and trim around the edges. With the tip of your blade, draw the eye-hole shapes onto the blue circle. Trim away the unneeded blue clay.  The shape you have left over will look kind of like Magneto’s helmet. Place the blue piece on top of the white circle and smooth the edges down using a dotting tool or your fingers. To add the cheeks, roll a small piece of tan clay out and cut a tear drop shaped piece for each cheek.  Two tiny pieces of yellow clay will form the beak. Use your dotting tool to smooth the two pieces together and shape them.

Flatten a half circle of tan clay and trim out a portion the size of the head. Attach the body to the side of the head and use your tools to smooth and attach the two pieces. Use two pieces of light blue clay to make the wings. There will be one larger wing in the front and a smaller one peeking out from the back.  Use your fingers to shape them and your dotting tool to smooth and attach them to the body. Trim out a tail piece from the blue clay. It is kind of shaped like a snake tongue. Attach it behind the front wing. The final pieces are the feet. Roll out six tiny ovals of yellow clay. Each foot has three toes together. Attach them to the bottom of the body.

Take some time to smooth and shape the bird and add in the details on the wings with your blade.  I decided to go back with my dotting tool and add some extra texture to my bird before I baked him. Bake according to the instructions on your clay package. Baking time and temperature will vary by clay brand and the size of your project.

Add in the details on the eyes with black paint or a fine tipped black marker. Then glaze with a gloss sealant. Let dry completely and your bluebird is done.

Making the Bow:

Cut a piece of red ribbon to form the tails of the bow. Fold it in half and trim the ends with an inverted V. Then hot glue the tails to the barrette. Glue two pieces of yellow ribbon down the tails in the center of the red ribbon. And add another layer of blue ribbon to the tails as well.

Cut a piece of red ribbon, then fold the ribbon edges under so that the bow is a little wider than the barrette. Glue the red ribbon into a loop. With a hot glue gun, glue the yellow ribbon down the center of the loop all the way around. Gather the loop in the middle and glue a piece of blue ribbon around it to create the bow shape. Next, hot glue the bow onto the barrette with a generous amount of hot glue.

Hot glue the bluebird to the center of the bow, and your Snow White inspired hair bow is done.
