MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

5-6 inch round wood disc from any craft store
4-inch female adapter PVC pipe
a small piece of sandpaper
holly green paint
kelly green paint
lime green paint
medium brown paint
chocolate brown paint
2-inch Mario figures
glue gun and glue sticks
mod podge matte

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Paint the wooden base: Start by painting the bottom and sides a chocolate brown. Let the bottom dry completely before flipping the piece over. Next paint the top of the wood circle a medium Kelly green. Let the top of the plaque dry so that you can handle it without getting paint on your fingers. Then extend the green paint down the side of the wooden base, about a third of an inch all the way around. Finally, use the medium brown paint to create the variation in the dirt. I painted squares; you could also use squiggles or any other pattern you like.

Sand the pipe: To prepare the pipe for paint, use sandpaper to remove all of the raised letters around the top. You can also lightly sand the sides of the pipe to make the paint adhere to the PVC plastic better. Once you have it sanded to your liking, make sure to wipe the pipe down with a cloth to remove the dust before painting.

Paint the pipe: Mix dark and medium green together to get a nice color for the pipe. I started with the inside of the pipe and worked in patches, using a heat gun to dry the paint as I went. This is your first coat of paint. You may see some of the black or white PVC showing through and that’s okay. While you are waiting for the pipe to dry, you may want to use a little of the darker green you have mixed up to add shading to the base. Next, give the pipe a second coat of green paint. You will notice that you get much more even and opaque coverage on the second coat of paint.

Add highlight details to the pipe: Use the light green paint. You can make an 8-bit or 16-bit pipe or paint a smooth gradient, or leave it completely plain if you want. It’s up to you.

Assembly:  Once the base and pipe are completely dry, it’s time to assemble them together and add in Mario and Luigi – or any other characters you would like. Place the pipe on the base and figure out how much space you will need for Mario and Luigi. Hot glue it to the base and add an extra ring of glue inside for stability. Then position your figures where you want them and hot glue them down.

Mod Podge: The final step is to give the entire project a coat of Mod Podge to protect the paint. Make sure to cover the inside with a generous coating as well. Once the Mod Podge is completely dry, your Mario Warp Pipe Pencil Holder is ready.
